Kronplatz is far more than just a mountain or a ski resort – it is a symbol of tradition, movement, and regional identity. These very qualities are also reflected in its most recognizable trademark: the Kronplatz rooster. But how did this unique logo originate, and why does it look the way it does today?

From an Idea to a Logo: “Giggo” Was Born in 1975

The story of the Kronplatz logo began in 1975, when an advertising agency was commissioned to create a unified symbol for the entire Kronplatz ski mountain. Among the submitted designs, two animals remained in the final selection: a sparrow and a rooster. Why these two motifs were chosen is no longer entirely clear today.

The final decision was made in a creative way: a second-grade primary school class from Bruneck selected the rooster by majority vote as part of a drawing competition – and it became the official logo of Kronplatz.

The rooster, affectionately called “Giggo” by locals, evolved over the years into one of South Tyrol’s most recognizable brand symbols. Today, it represents not only the unique skiing experience but also the diversity of the entire holiday region.

The Meaning Behind the Logo: More Than Just a Rooster

The Kronplatz logo features the stylized silhouette of a rooster with distinctive spikes – and these elements carry a deeper meaning:

🔹 The three lower spikes represent the three classic valley stations and villages from which Kronplatz can be accessed:

  • Bruneck (Reischach)
  • St. Vigil
  • Olang

They symbolize the three main directions from which winter sports enthusiasts and visitors reach the mountain.

🔹 The three upper spikes form the rooster’s “crown” and refer to one of the region’s most important legends: the story of the invincible Princess Dolasilla. According to legend, she was crowned as a warrior on Kronplatz – which is also said to be the origin of the mountain’s name: Kronplatz = “place of coronation.”

Why the Logo Still Works Today

A strong logo tells a story – and that is exactly what the Kronplatz rooster achieves so successfully. It combines:

🎨 Tradition and identity: Thanks to the involvement of Bruneck’s schoolchildren, it became a true symbol of the region.
🏔️ Regional character: The spikes represent the villages that bring the mountain to life.
🛷 Myth and meaning: The connection to Dolasilla gives the logo cultural depth.

Today, the Kronplatz rooster is far more than just a logo: it represents a lifestyle – the connection between Alpine tradition, sporting dynamism, and tourism diversity. That is exactly why it remains memorable, whether on ski maps, souvenirs, sportswear, or digital media.
